A Calloused Heart

How do you get a callus on your hand? Those of you who are gardeners know. The guitar players among us see the fingertip variety, as well. Many other sportsmen bear them from the repeated friction or pressure on their feet or hands.
How does a 'heart' get called calloused?
For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’
Matthew 13:15Repeated friction or pressure causes a callus in the body; perhaps it is the same in the heart. Might it be that protective layer we cover ourselves in to prevent being hurt? The pressure on our lives: the sarcasm, disdain, or disregard from others, all might have a secondary effect on our lives that we do not see. A calloused heart...
Or are we the ones who, out of a lashing, offensive, calloused heart, have been the cause of pain for others?
No longer wishing to hear the hateful, do we end up blocking the helpful or healing voices as well?
Or, no longer able to speak a kind word, do we spread our pain through criticism to those around us, and end up blocking those healing voices?
HIS voice is quiet and tender, heard only by those seeking it. You have to turn your head to hear, even move toward that voice, a turning away from the life, the mess, we have made. You finally come to understand.
His voice heals all manner of calloused hearts. As that verse declares, we must turn to be healed. Turn TO HIM for healing!
So strain your ears and listen! Look up and see WHO is there seeking to heal your calloused, insensitive hearts, whatever you or life has done to cause them.
Listen, and hear. Turn. And be healed!
